Ernst Kirchner was a member of the Die Brucke Group which led to the Expressionist Movement. Kirchner was born in Bavaria and studied in Dresden. Kirchner volunteered for the army but was invalided out due to a mental breakdown. Through his paintings he became well liked and fashionable and his work sold well, giving him financial freedom. Whilst in Davos in Switzerland he became acquainted with the work of Ferdinand Hodler. Kirchner’s paintings were judged to be degenerative by the Nazis and over 600 of his them were confiscated. His paintings were displayed in New York at the first Armory Show in 1913.
