American painter Barnett Newman is regarded as one of the most influential Abstract Expressionists, and along with Mark Rothko is one of the most well-known color field painters. Newman was born in New York and studied at the City College, starting out as an Expressionist artist. He decided that he did not like his work and destroyed every painting. Barnett Newman became a member of the Uptown Group of artists and had his first solo exhibition at the famous and influential Betty Parsons Gallery. Newman his famous for his “zips”; thin vertical lines of color that divide the colors in his canvasses. Newman’s most famous paintings are his from the Onement Series. Newman rejected the color splash technique of Jackson Pollock, and the brushstrokes of Clyfford Still, and to a lesser, extent, Mark Rothko, for a flat color field. His paintings fetch huge prices at auction, with Black Fire 1 selling in 2014 for over $84 million.
