Juan Gris was a Spanish painter who lived and worked mainly in France. Gris is associated with the Cubist Movement and was friends with Fernand Leger, Henri Matisse, and Georges Braque. He was also close to his countryman Pablo Picasso. Later in life Gris designed sets for the Ballet Russe.
Juan Gris refined traditional Cubism to develop a very personal and unique approach to Cubist painting.
“Portrait of Picasso 1912” painted by Juan in 1912 illustrates this point.
In Cubist still life paintings by Juan Gris, such as Landscape with Houses at Ceret 1913, the artist skillfully expresses himself with a bright color palette.
Juan Gris died very young at the age of 40. His most expensive painting ever sold at auction for $57.1 million.
