Armand Guillaumin was a French artist known for his association with the Impressionism art movement. He was born in Paris and studied at the Academie Suisse. Here, he became lifelong friends with fellow French artist Paul Cezanne and the French-Danish painter Camille Pissarro. Guillaumin was never as famous as either of these two artists. However, his oil paintings were influential in their painting style. Cezanne’s first painting was based on Armand Guillaumin's oil painting: Barges on the Seine.
The artist was also acquainted with Vincent van Gogh and his art dealer brother Theo, who sold Guillaumin’s paintings—in the middle of the 1800's other notable painters of the day, including Paul Gauguin, Georges Seurat, and Paul Signac, met regularly in Guillaumin's Paris studio. In 1892, a sizeable State Lottery win allowed him to leave his mundane job to concentrate on painting full-time.
Best known for his landscape oil paintings of Paris and the Crozant area of the South of France, many of Armand Guillaumin's famous paintings can be found in major art museums worldwide.
