Painter Armand Guillaumin was a French artist known for his Impressionist paintings and lithographs. He was born in Paris and studied at the Academie Swisse where he met and became lifelong friends with fellow Impressionist painters Paul Cezanne and Camille Pissarro. Guillaumin was never as famous as either Cezanne or Pissarro but he was very influential upon their work. In fact, Cezanne’s first painting was based on a Guillaumin’s painting Barges on the Seine. Guillaumin won a substantial amount on the lottery and was able to give up work and concentrate on his painting. He became friends with Vincent van Gogh, and his brother Theo, who sold Guillaumin’s paintings. Armand Guillaumin is best known for his landscape oil paintings of Paris and the Crozant area of the South of France.
The impressionist oil painting “Village Street” also known as “In the Countryside” by Armand Guillaumin is a landscape painting with a fauvist palette of color.
