Giorgio de Chirico was an Italian artist who founded the scuola metafisica movement, which was a significant influence on the Surrealists, and also a profound influence on modern art. Born in Greece and trained in Athens, de Chirico was influenced by classical Greek architecture and his paintings display the use of Classical themes. He moved to Munich on the death of his father and then to Milan, and Florence. His work was admired by Pablo Picasso. Artists who were influenced by the work of de Chirico include Max Ernst, Salvador Dali, and Rene Magritte. Many of his paintings are held by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
