Frank Weston Benson was an American Impressionist who started his career as a realist portrait painter. In 1898 Frank W. Benson joined The Ten American Painters group which included other famous American painters John Henry Twatchtman, J. Alden Weir, Edmund Tarbell, Willard Leroy Metcalfe and Childe Hassam.
For some 23 years Frank W. Benson taught at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston gaining recognition for his portraits and landscape oil paintings. During his lifetime he was hailed as America’s most awarded artist, with his first prize being awarded in 1890 when he was just 28 years of age.
Just like the French Impressionists Frank Benson began en plein air painting and he became well known for his outdoor family scenes and landscapes. He often painted at his summer holiday home in North Haven, Maine.
