Also known as the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, this was initially a secret society of English artists founded in 1848 by Dante Gabrielle Rossetti. This group of artists rejected the classical styles of art they associated with the artist Raphael. Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris later joined the movement and they all produced pre-Raphaelite oil paintings. John Maler Collier was also associated with the Group. The principal member of the Pre-Raphaelite Movement, Dante Gabrielle Rossetti, completed his oil painting Proserpine over a 7 year period. The original work is held by the Tate Britain. John William Waterhouse worked in the Pre-Raphaelite style and his pre-Raphaelite oil painting entitled Boreas (the Greek God of the North Wind) was finished in 1903. Boreas achieved the highest selling price for any of his pre-Raphaelite paintings when it was sold.
The wonderful paintings by these artists can be enjoyed today as pre-Raphaelite reproductions.
