American Modernist artist Arthur Dove often considered to the first American abstract artist. He was born to a wealthy New York family and was educated at Cornell University. Arthur Dove became a well-known commercial Illustrator in New York City, working for Harper’s Magazine. He traveled to Paris and was influenced by the work of Henri Matisse. Upon Dove’s return to New York he met Alfred Stieglitz, a well-known gallery owner and promoter of European Artists. Arthur Dove’s paintings were frequently shown in the Stieglitz Gallery and he was noticed by prominent collector Duncan Phillips, founder of the Phillips Collection in Washington DC. Phillips paid Arthur Dove a monthly commission for every painting that he produced, whether it was purchased by Phillips or not. The Phillips Collection hold the majority of Dove’s work, but the Whitney and the Museum of Modern Art also own and display several of his paintings.
