Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog is one of Caspar David Friedrich's most famous paintings. Other famous Romanticism paintings include The Monk by the Sea, c. 1809, and Sea of Ice, c. 1823. Both of these oil paintings underwent extensive restoration by the Staatliche Museum in Berlin. The restoration process took almost three years. Monk by the Sea is a mesmerizing romantic painting; the small figure of a monk stands before a vast sea and sky while feeling the presence of the Lord.

The Sea of Ice c1823, originally known as The Polar Sea, depicts the Arctic Sea with a shipwreck. It was only sold after the artist's death in 1840 and is now considered one of his finest paintings of the Romantic art movement.

Who is Caspar David Friedrich?

He was born into a large and low-income family in September 1774 on the Baltic coast. Caspar David Friedrich went on to study in Copenhagen at the Academy of Art, having impressed his early tutors in his hometown of Greifswald. He moved to Dresden in 1798 and, after frequent trips to the Baltic coast, began painting landscapes of Northern Germany.

The artist was elected a member of the Berlin Academy in 1810 following the purchase of two of his paintings by the Prussian Crown Prince. In 1818, he married and had three children. His oil paintings were also popular with the Russian nobility, and many were displayed in the Royal Palaces of St. Petersburg.

Caspar David Friedrich's popularity was in serious decline at the end of his life, and he died in financial poverty. His famous paintings were all but forgotten until they were rediscovered some 60 years later by Norwegian painter Edvard Munch. Other famous artists greatly admired Friedrich's art. The German artist Max Ernst admired his artwork, and another Surrealist artist, René Magritte, praised his paintings.

Even the famous color field painter Mark Rothko regarded Caspar David Friedrich paintings as inspirational, with The Monk by the Sea inspiring his painting Light Earth and Blue.

• Cross Beside the Baltic 1815 by Caspar Friedrich. This oil on canvas painting is on display at Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin. The Palace was built in the 17th Century and is sumptuously decorated in both Baroque and Rococo styles.
• Chalk Cliffs on Rugen. A German Romantic painting, completed in 1818, depicting a scene of the Baltic Sea on the Island of Rügen. The painting measures 90 x 71cm [35.6" x 28"] and is located at the Museum Oskar Reinhart.
• Woman at the Window. This painting, dated 1822, is on display at the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin. The Woman at the Window is Caspar David Friedrich's wife, Caroline Bommer, whom he married in 1818. She also appears in some of his other famous paintings.
• The Stages of Life by Caspar David Friedrich. Completed in 1835, Stages of Life is another of the artist's famous Romanticism paintings, which also references the Symbolism art movement. It was painted towards the end of Friedrich's life and is currently housed at The Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig.
