Romain de Tirtoff, more commonly known as Erte, was a 20th century Russian artist, graphic designer, stage set designer, and jewelry and fashion designer. He was born in St. Petersburg lived in Paris for most of his life.
Erte is known for his Art Deco costume designs for Hollywood movies. He designed the sets and costumes for Classic films such as Ben-Hur and The Restless Sex. William Randolph Hearst financed both films.
Erte also designed many of the stage sets for the Folies Bergere in Paris.
For over 20 years, Erte’s art-deco designs graced the covers of the style magazine Harper's Bazaar.
Famous vintage covers include the 1923 Christmas Number and the Summer Fashion cover of 1921. His art and designs still influence modern day designers.
Romain de Tirtoff died in Paris in 1990, at the age of 97.
