Romain de Tirtoff, more generally known as Erte, was a 20th century Russian artist, graphic designer, stage set designer, jewelry and fashion designer. He was born in St Petersburg and lived for a time in Paris.
Erte is known for his art-deco costume designs for Hollywood movies and he designed the sets and costumes for such classics as Ben Hur, and The Restless Sex, financed by William Randolph Hearst and starring Marion Davies.
Erte also designed many of the stage sets for the Follies Bergere, in Paris.
For over 20 years, Erte’s art-deco designs graced the covers of the style magazine Harpers Bazaar.
Famous vintage covers include the 1923 Christmas Number and the Summer Fashion cover of 1921.
Erte’s art and designs still influence modern day designers and he died in Paris in 1990, aged 97.
