George Bellows was born in 1882 dying prematurely, aged 42. He is an American realist painter of the early 20th century, best known for his tough portrayals of life in New York City. Bellows is associated with the Ashcan School whose artists are known for oil paintings of gritty scenes of the poorer neighborhoods of New York City. He was born in Columbus, Ohio, and studied art at the New York School of Art with another American painter Robert Henri.
