Hilma af Klint was a 19th and 20th century Swedish Abstract artist whose abstract oil on canvas paintings were heavily influenced by her spiritual beliefs. She was born in 1862 and died in 1944 as the result of a road accident at the age of 82.
Hilma Klint is acknowledged as the very first Abstract Art Movement artist as her paintings predate that of Wassily Kandinsky’s first abstract water color painting in 1910. Klint’s paintings were not widely known outside Sweden as she rarely exhibited during her lifetime. Upon her death, she left all of her artwork to her nephew, with very clear instructions that the storage boxes were not to be opened for 20 years. They were opened in the 1960’s and it was then that the huge significance of more than 1200 paintings was recognized.
Believing that she was compelled by the spirits, Hilma af Klint created a series of oversized paintings called Paintings for the Temple. She completed a total of 193 oil paintings over a nine year period.
