Josep Tapiro Baro Oil Painting Reproductions

Josep Tapiro Baro is a Spanish artist who was born in 1913.  He was acquainted with fellow Spanish artist Maria Fortuny.  In 1862 Baro went to Rome, where his friend Maria Fortuny was studying, and it was here his art developed with the Genre paintings for which he is now well known.  However, a trip to Tangier in 1871 was a turning point for Baro.  When his friend Fortuny died suddenly, Baro moved to the Medina Quarter in Tangiers, where he set up his  Studio.  He remained in Tangiers until his death.

Barro is a leading figure in Orientalism art, and his portrait paintings include Santon, Street Preacher, and Berber Bride. Other examples of Orientalism are to be found by the French artist Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres and his famous painting The Grand Odalisque.  Ingres' painting is also featured in our art collection of Famous Nude Paintings.  Many more examples of Orientalist paintings are to be found in the catalog of oil paintings by Jean Leon Gerome, who, during the 1880s, was the most famous living artist of the time.  Orientalism art by Jean Leon Gerome includes famous paintings such as  The Carpet Merchant 1887, Evening Prayer Cairo, and the portrait painting of Bashi-Bazouk on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

For many, Josep Tapiro Baro exhibited his work internationally, and he even traveled to New York and St. Petersburg.  However, in early 1900 his popularity waned, and his health declined.  He died in Tangiers in 1913, aged 77.
