Irish artist Stanhope A. Forbes founded the Newlyn School of Art in Cornwall with his wife Elizabeth Stanhope-Forbes, also an artist, whom he met whilst studying at what was The South Kensington School of Art. After studying in Paris the couple moved to Cornwall, where the light was similar to that in France and it was there they founded the Newlyn School, working alongside other Newlyn School artists such as Walter Langley and Henry Scott Tuke.
