Irish painter Stanhope Forbes founded the Newlyn School in Cornwall with his wife Elizabeth Stanhope-Forbes. Forbes was educated in London at Dulwich College and then at The South Kensington School of Art, where he met his wife who was also studying art. He then studied at the Lambeth School of Art and then at the Royal Academy where he was taught by Sir Frederic Leighton. He completed his studies in Paris he married Elizabeth Adela Forbes. They moved to Cornwall, where the light was similar to that in France and founded the Newlyn Art School.
A Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach was painted by Stanhope Forbes in 1885 and he painted many Cornish coastal scenes of fishermen and their boats.
Stanhope Forbes “A Street in Brittany” is an oil painting which portrays Breton women knitting in the street at Cancale. This painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 1882.
