Thomas Wilmer Dewing was part of the American Impressionism art Movement who was born in Boston. Dewing founded the Ten American Painters artists group with John Twachtman and Childe Hassam. Dewing was trained in Paris before returning to America where he taught at the Art Students League of New York. Although Thomas Dewing paintings have a feel of the Pre-Raphaelites, his works are generally Tonalist Movement in style. Many of his paintings are shown in a dedicated Dewing Room at the Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, DC.
His wife was the painter Maria Oakey Dewing.
