When did the Amon Carter Museum open?

The Amon Carter Museum opened its doors in 1961.  It is located in Fort Worth, Texas, and was initially named the Amon Carter Museum of Western Art.

The first collection was assembled by local philanthropist Amon G. Carter Snr and consisted of 300 artworks.

Architect Philip Johnson designed the building, and its modern style is representative of the 1960s design trends of the period.  Johnson remodeled the building again in 1964.

The Museum enjoyed its 60th Anniversary in 2021 and continues adding to its American art collection.

What type of art is in the Amon Carter Museum?

The Museum’s collection centers around American Western art, featuring the western cowboy paintings of Frederic Remington art Charles Marion Russell.  Over the years, the collection has widened and includes oil paintings by Grant Wood, Thomas Eakins, Mary Cassatt, and William Merit Chase.

Who is the American artist known for Western paintings?

The most famous American Frontier artist is undoubtedly Charles Marion Russell, more familiarly known as Charlie Russell.  He created over 2,000 western cowboy paintings and landscape paintings of the Old American West. The Amon Carter Museum holds the largest selection of the artist’s work.

Charles Russell’s painting, In Without Knocking 1909 and Frederic Remington’s The Fall of the Cowboy are two of our most frequently requested oil painting reproductions.  While Russell and Remington were active during the same period, they never met, but these two artists alone are responsible for the birth of the cowboy and western art genres.
