Where is the Mauritshuis Museum?

The Mauritshuis Museum of Art is in The Hague, the Netherlands. In English, Mauritshuis translates as Maurice House.  It was built in 1631 by John Maurice, the Prince of Nassau-Siegen, a principality within the Holy Roman Empire.

The Dutch State owned the building from 1820 to 1995. After that, the Government privates the Museum, and a foundation was set up to manage the collection and the building.

Which Famous Paintings are in the Mauritshuis?

The Museum is home to the Royal Cabinet of Paintings, a collection of artworks owned by the Dutch Government, consisting of 854 items, mainly oil paintings from the Dutch Golden Age.

The Collection holds paintings by Johannes Vermeer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Jan Steen, Paulus Potter, Frans Hals, Hans Holbein the Younger, and many other lesser-known Dutch painters.

The most famous painting in the museum is Vermeer’s Pearl Earring painting. Another Vermeer, View of Delft, 1660, is also on view.

Frans Hals’s paintings, Portrait of Jacob Pietersz Olycan and Portrait of Aletta Hanemans, are also in the Museums’ ownership.

Rembrandt's Portraits include Self Portrait 1669 and Portrait of an Elderly Man.  However, one of Rembrandt’s most acclaimed paintings, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicholaes Tulp, is also part of the collection.

The Goldfinch, 1654 by Carel Fabritius, is one of the most recognizable paintings of birds.

What Other Paintings are in The Mauritshuis?

There are many famous paintings in the collection from artists in the baroque period.  Peter Paul Rubens paintings include two portraits of Helena Fourment and Portrait of a Young Woman.  Rubens painting of Venus Trying to Retrain Adonis from the Department Hunt is an oil painting on view in the Gallery Prince Willem V.
