Who is George Bellows?

George Bellows, born in 1882, died prematurely at 42. He is realism paintings of the early 20th century are best known for their uncompromising portrayals of life in New York City.  Bellows associates with the Ashcan School, whose artists are famous for creating oil paintings of gritty scenes in the poorer neighborhoods of New York City. He was born in Columbus, Ohio, and studied art at the New York School of Art with another American painter, Robert Henri. 

While Bellows is best known for his sports paintings, he also created stunning landscape art and seascape paintings. His paintings of the American countryside and coastlines are a testament to his skill as a painter.

George Bellows painting The Fisherman depicts an isolated figure fishing on the rocky shoreline. The Fisherman is a landscape painting that alludes to a sense of peace and solitude. In 2016, the painting was the first acquisition of a George Bellows painting by the Amon Carter Museum.
