William Blake was an artist, famous poet, and printmaker recognized as one of the most influential figures of the Romanticism era.
He was born in Soho, London, in 1757. He studied with some of the greatest artists, engravers, poets, and writers of the era. Although born into a working-class family, he was accepted at the Royal Academy School aged 22. The Blake family held strong religious beliefs, and religious art features prominently in William Blake's paintings.
William Blake paintings influenced the Pre Raphaelite paintings by notably famous artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the poet William Butler Yeats, Benjamin Britten, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and contemporary songwriters Bob Dylan and Van Morrison. In 2002 he was ranked 38 out of 100 in a Greatest Britons poll, and he was also admired and revered by his peers and critics during his lifetime.
He is linked to the Romanticism Art movement and Symbolism painting. William Blake paintings include Ancient of Days 1794 and Pity 1895. However, our most popular oil painting on canvas remains God Blessing the Seventh Day.
