Why is The Rijksmuseum Famous?

The Rijksmuseum is the national museum of the Netherlands, founded in 1798.  The Rijksmuseum is the largest museum in the Netherlands with a long history. 

The Museum is close to the Stedelijk and the van Gogh Museums on Museum Square in Amsterdam.  It has over 8,000 objects on display from a total collection of over one million items. 

History of the Rijksmuseum

When Emperor Napoleon formed the Batavian Republic, he placed his brother Louis Bonaparte on the Dutch Throne. The Republic was a client state of France, and the Minister of Finance, Isaac Gogel, decided that the Republic should have a national museum, much the same as the French Republic has its national Louvre Museum.

The Royal Palace and the Trippenhuis previously housed the collection, before the Museum Square, before its construction in 1876.

Another new building was added nearby in 1890, known as the "fragment building", constructed of fragments of demolished buildings, which features a Dutch architectural history.

Rembrandt's The Night Watch is the most famous painting in the Museum. Following a complete restoration of the main building in 2012, the Night Watch returned to the Night Watch Room at the end of a gallery known as the Hall of Fame.

Famous Rembrandt paintings include Jeremiah Lamenting the Destruction of Jerusalem, dated 1630.  It is one of 25 paintings by Rembrandt in the Rijksmuseum.

Famous Paintings in the Rijksmuseum?

As one would expect in the national museum of the Netherlands, the Rijksmuseum holds an impressive collection of paintings by Dutch Masters, mainly from the Dutch Golden Age. The best known artists with paintings in the museum are Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Johannes Vermeer, Jan Steen, and Jacob van Ruisdael.

Frans Hals has 11 paintings in the museum, his 1622 Portrait of a Young Couple being the best known. 

The Milkmaid by Vermeer is in the Museum, along with The Threatened Swan by Jan Asselijn.
