Where is The Van Gogh Museum?

The Van Gogh Museum, located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, is dedicated to the oil paintings of the renowned artist Vincent Van Gogh.  The Museum houses the most extensive collection of Van Gogh’s paintings, drawings, and letters in the world.  It contains over 200 paintings, 400 drawings, and 700 letters by the artist. 

The building was commissioned by the Dutch Government and opened in 1973. It consists of two buildings. The Rietveld Building is the main building, housing the permanent collection, while the Kurokawa Wing is dedicated to temporary exhibitions.

How did the Van Gogh Museum obtain its Collection?

During his lifetime, Van Gogh sold very few paintings. However, upon his death in 1890, his brother Theo inherited van Gogh's unsold works of art. Theo died only six months after Vincent, bequeathing everything to his wife, Johanna van Gogh-Bonger.

Johanna promoted Vincent's work, not just in Europe but also in America.  She translated many hundreds of Vincent's letters to Theo into English and then had them published.

Following Johanna's death, her son Vincent Willem loaned the collection to the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.  From here, they were transferred to the state-owned Vincent van Gogh Foundation, which then placed Van Gogh's paintings on permanent display in the Rietveld Building.

What are the titles of famous van Gogh Paintings?

Van Gogh's Sunflowers 1888 is just one of the well-known oil paintings on permanent display.  There are five Vincent van Gogh's Sunflower paintings in the series. Their joyous yellow compositions make them some of our most popular flower paintings.

• Almond Blossom 1890 was painted in St Remy. This painting has a softer and gentler palette of colors than many of his other canvases, and it was created towards the end of his time in the Psychiatric Clinic.
• The Pink Peach Tree and Peach Tree in Blossom were both painted in Arles in 1888. They are just two of our fine art reproductions of van Gogh's tree paintings.
• Wheatfield under Thunder Clouds was painted at Auvers in 1890, giving us an excellent insight into van Gogh's landscape art.  Wheatfield with Crows was also painted during the same period.
• Van Gogh Self Portraits.   Self Portrait with Grey Felt Hat. The Museum boasts a large selection of Vincent van Gogh self portrait paintings.  One of the better-known of Van Gogh's self-portraits is his painting "Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat."
• "Fishing Boats on the Beach at Les Saintes-Maries" and "Seascape near Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer" are two of van Gogh's painted seascapes on display in the museum's permanent collection.
• Van Gogh's painting "Café Terrace at Night" is housed in the Van Gogh Gallery at the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo.  Terrace of a Café at Night (Place du Forum) is the first Van Gogh painting depicting a Starry Night sky.
• Courtesan (after Eisen), Flowering Plum Orchard (after Hiroshige), and Bridge in the Rain (after Hiroshige) represent van Gogh's tribute to the wave of Japonisme, much admired across Europe during this time.

Van Gogh's most famous painting, The Starry Night, has been on display at The Museum of Modern Art in New York since 1941.  It attracts millions of visitors each year.
