Paul Gauguin was a French post-impressionist painter who also was associated with the Symbolist movement. He famously was friends with Van Gogh and Edgar Degas, and many of his more widely known and most valuable works are from his various visits to and while living in the South Pacific, in Tahiti, and the Marquesas. Gauguin was a lifelong friend of Degas, but other contemporaries such as Pissarro, Renoir and Monet were very critical of his work.
