Natalia Goncharova was a Russian avant-garde artist, set designer, sculptor and illustrator. She trained as an artist and sculptor in Moscow, and joined a radical art group known as Jack of Diamonds. She became famous in Russia for her Futurist paintings and moved to Paris to design sets for the Ballet Russes. Goncharova held the record for the highest price ever achieved at auction for a female artist in 2008 when $10.8 million was paid for her 1912 painting The Flowers.
Natalie Goncharova painted Pierrot and Colombina in 1906 and is perhaps a self-portrait of the artist in harlequin dress.
