French artist Robert Delaunay is best known for founding the Orphism movement. The Orphists were Cubist painters who wanted to move towards a form of lyrical abstraction, bringing together a sensation of pure colors. Robert Delaunay studied in Paris and his first paintings looked like mosaics of color, assembled together to form a shape. However, some of Delaunay's later paintings were much more abstract. His theories about the use of light and color were very influential on many subsequent artists, including the German Group Der Blaue Reiter artists Auguste Macke, Franz Marc and Paul Klee. Delaunay joined Der Blaue Reiter in Munich at the invitation of Wassily Kandinsky.
