His monumental The Ninth Wave (1850), now held by the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, measures an impressive 221 × 332 cm (87 × 131 in). Ilya Repin, a leading figure associated with the Peredvizhniki, or Wanderers, became one of the defining artists of Russian Realism. Ivan Shishkin, meanwhile, became known for detailed forests and landscapes, while Isaac Levitan took a more atmospheric approach, using light, weather and mood to shape his scenes.

The early 20th century looked very different. Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin's Bathing of a Red Horse (1912), now in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, used intense color, simplified forms and an unusual perspective to create one of the most recognizable images in Russian art.
