The term Rococo comes from the French “rocaille.” It originally meant “rock work,” referring to creations based on flowing marine forms such as seashells and corals. The word relates to Renaissance trends for decorating artificial grottos with pebbles and stones. Over time, this phrase shifted to describe oil paintings employing a similar aesthetic. In practice, this meant images featuring scrolls, short curves, counter curves, and fantastical elements. Today, Rococo refers to this artistic style. 1. Jean Honore Fragonard, The Swing 1767

The Swing by Jean Honore Fragonard is one of the most prominent examples of Rococo art. It is a true masterpiece of the genre. Indeed, Fragonard specialized in playful, erotic compositions characteristic of the Rococo style. The painting depicts an elegant upper-class woman delicately balanced on a swing. It shows a dreamlike natural world far away from the troubles of everyday life. While the painting is not overtly erotic, trivial details hint at a sensual theme. For example, a young man gazes at the woman, with a perfect vantage point for seeing straight up her billowing skirt. His arm stretches longingly in her direction. A stone statue also holds a single finger to its lips, hinting at secrets and affairs. Furthermore, a small dog appears in the lower-right corner of the composition. The dog is an ironic allusion to fidelity, ignored by the romantic couple.

2. Francisco Goya, The Nude Maja c 1797

Maja Desnuda, or The Nude Maja, is one of the more fascinating and famous nude paintings by Francisco Goya. At first glance, it is not a Rococo painting. Nor is Francisco Goya a Rococo artist. Yet, despite this, it features many essential themes of Rococo art. For instance, Goya delights in the woman’s unabashed sensuality. He uses soft pastel tones for her skin and the bedding, carefully depicted in detail. Art Historians believe the woman was a lover of the Spanish Prime Minister, Manuel de Godoy. As such, it also references Rococo themes of sensual desire, youth, and love. Today,  Goya's Maja Desnuda is one of the most famous oil paintings. Other paintings by Francisco Goya, for instance, The Parasol c1777, similarly present Rococo ideas. A young woman takes center stage alongside her attendant in this oil painting. The colorfully dressed pair appear relaxed and at ease amidst a romantic, natural scene. 

3. Thomas Gainsborough, The Blue Boy c 1770

The artist studied under the French artist Hubert Francois Gravelot. As a result, Thomas Gainsborough paintings often use a  Rococo art style, with fashionably dressed individuals in bucolic natural settings. The Blue Boy is one of the most famous Gainsborough oil paintings. As a life-size work, it cleverly blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. The artwork shows a young boy with rosy cheeks dressed in a blue outfit. The delicate and elegant figure shines out against the rural, rust-colored background. Scholars believe the boy is Jonathan Buttall, the son of a wealthy merchant. Thomas Gainsborough The Blue Boy painting also shows the artist’s appreciation of Anthony van Dyck, and the boy’s silk suit is reminiscent of van Dyck’s portrait painting style.
