A J Casson was born Alfred Joseph Casson. He is one of Canada's most famous artists. He was born in Toronto to an English father and a Canadian mother.
Franklin Carmichael, also a member of the famous Canadian Group of Seven artists, is responsible for A.J. Casson’s discovery of his love of oil painting.
In 1919, both men worked for a Commercial Art firm in Toronto, and Franklin Carmichael was responsible for training the young Alfred. Franklin Carmichael encouraged Casson to paint in his spare time, allowing the artist to discover his distinctive oil painting style.
A.J. Casson's oil paintings are some of the most popular Canadian landscape paintings of the 20th Century. In 1925, two other Canadian painters, Carmichael and FH Brigden, joined to form the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolor.
In 1926, the artist accepted a request to join the Group of Seven. However, following its dissolution, in 1933, A.J. Casson founded the Canadian Group of Painters. The Group includes the renowned female artist Emily Carr. Founding members of the Group of Seven include Lawren Harris, J.E.H. MacDonald, Frank Johnston, Franklin Carmichael, Arthur Lismer, and A.Y. Jackson.
A.J. Casson’s most famous painting is White Pine 1957. This oil on canvas painting is based near Dreamer's Rock, on the Whitefish River First Nation, Highway 6. White Pine is an iconic symbol of Canadian Art landscape Paintings. The site is a vast rocky outcrop with a significant history and is one of North America's most revered and sacred First Nation locations.
