Cecilia Beaux was an American society portrait painter of the late 19th and early 20th century. Beaux was a contemporary of Mary Cassatt and painted in the style of another famous American portraitist artist John Singer Sargent. Beaux was the daughter of a French silk merchant who was born in Philadelphia. She was brought up by her grandmother and aunts following the death of her mother and departure of her father to his native France. Cecilia Beaux studied first at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and then in Paris. When in Paris she came into contact with the later years of the Impressionist movement. However impressionism was the very opposite of Beaux’s style of painting who had trained with William-Adolphe Bouguereau and was painting in the Academic art style. Returning to America she became a famous portrait painter who was very much in demand. Cecilia Beaux painted a portrait of Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt and her daughter Ethel and many other famous people of the time.
Cecilia Beaux’s painting Portrait of Flora Whitney was painted in 1916 and Man with the Cat, (Henry Sturgis Drinker) was painted in 1898.
