Where is the Metropolitan Museum of Art?

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is in New York City and is generally known as “The Met”.  The Met is the largest museum in North and South America, with over two million objects in its permanent collection.

The main museum building is located at 1000 Fifth Avenue, on the eastern side of Manhattan’s Central Park.  It was founded in 1870.

Which Famous Oil Paintings are in the Collection?

The permanent collection at the Met holds artworks from classical antiquity to modern and contemporary paintings.

The Museum retains the prestigious Robert Lehman Collection.  Lehman was a famous banker who donated some 2,600 works to the museum upon his death. The collection is held in the Robert Lehman Wing on the Fifth Avenue location. 

This renowned art collection is acknowledged as one of the most extraordinary American private art collections.

The Lehman Collection includes Italian Renaissance oil paintings, and Spanish Old Masters. In addition, a collection of drawings by Rembrandt alongside some 20^th century famous paintings are at the Met. 

El Greco, Christ Carrying the Cross is just one of the famous religious paintings on view.

Does the Met display Modern Art Oil Paintings?

The Met holds a collection of some 13,000 modern and contemporary artworks, mainly by European and American artists. These artworks are on view in 60,000 square feet of gallery space.

Impressionist oil paintings include Renoir’s Two Girls at the Piano and his nude painting Young Girl Bathing.

In 1984, the German art dealer and collector Heinz Berggruen donated 90 paintings by the artist Paul Klee.

Many years later, in 2013, the cosmetics billionaire son of Estee Lauder, Leonard Lauder pledged 81 Cubist oil paintings to the Museum.

What are the Highlights of the Met’s Art Collection?

The collection at the Met is varied and extensive. In addition to the Berggruen gift of Paul Klee paintings, Rembrandt’s famous Self Portrait Painting dated 1660 and several Vermeer paintings draw thousands of visitors annually.  

Christ Asleep during the Tempest by Eugene Delacroix, Card Players 1890 by Paul Cezanne, and The Siesta by Paul Gauguin are famous paintings at the Met. 

Monet’s impressionist oil painting of London, The Houses of Parliament (Fog Effect), is also at the Met.

There are many portraits in the collection, including the notorious Portrait of Madame X by John Singer Sargent.

With such a magnificent collection of oil paintings spanning so many art movements, it is no surprise that the Met is the fifth most visited museum in the world, with over two million visitors annually.
