The Museum of Fine Art, Boston and its history.

The Museum of Fine Art, Boston, usually known as the MFA Boston, is the 20th largest museum in the world by public gallery space. 

It houses some of the world’s most famous oil paintings. The MFA was founded in 1870 in Copley Square in Boston and moved to the current Fenway location in 1909.

Well-known local architect Guy Lowell designed a purpose-built building.  It features a 150-meter-long facade in granite. The building was designed to be built in stages, allowing the museum trustees to fund each stage of construction from donations. The second phase is the Fens wing, built specifically to house paintings.

Artist John Singer Sargent art is painted on the frescos in the rotunda and nearby colonnades.  These additions were made between 1916 and 1925.

The MFA Collection

The MFA holds one of the finest collections in the world.

The collection includes ancient Egyptian artifacts and Dutch Golden Age paintings.   French Impressionist paintings feature widely with famous paintings by  Paul Gauguin, Edouard Manet, Edgar Degas, and Camille Pissarro.

Paintings by Renoir include Dance at Bougival, one of our most popular art reproductions on canvas.  Van Gogh portrait paintings are represented by his oil painting of The Postman, Joseph Roulin, and a landscape oil painting of the Coast Near Menton, France.

The MFA holds the most extensive collection of the works of Claude Monet outside Paris. Famous paintings by Claude Monet include one of his beautiful flower paintings of The Flower Beds at Vetheuil, painted in 1881.

The MFA also holds the most extensive collection of Japanese art outside of Japan, based on the gifts to the MFA of four private collections.

Over 130 objects, previously looted by the Nazis, and then recovered, were donated by the Austrian branch of the Rothschild family.

Overall, the MFA has more than 450,000 items in its collection.
