Where is the Hermitage Museum?

The Hermitage Museum is a museum of art and culture in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

The Hermitage is the largest art museum in the world, founded in 1764 and open to the public since 1852.

Empress Catherine the Great is responsible for many artworks after purchasing an extensive collection from a Berlin merchant.

The collections comprise over three million items, but over one-third of the collection relates to coins and banknotes.

The collections appear in a vast complex of six historic buildings.  Sitting on the Saint Petersburg Embankment, they include the famous Winter Palace and the Menshikov Palace.

Renaissance Oil Paintings and Dutch Golden Age art at the Hermitage Museum

Spanish and Italian Old Masters paintings by Tintoretto, Velasquez, Murillo, Goya, and Renaissance oil paintings by Leonardo da Vinci are some of the most famous paintings in the Museum.

Given the enormous size of the collection, it features almost every kind of art. Prehistoric, Egyptian, Classical Greek, and Roman, as well as jewelry, decorative art, and European arms and armor, are all on display.

The Dutch Golden Age has galleries displaying artworks by Van Dyke, Rubens, Rembrandt, Jan Bruegel the Elder, Frans Snyders, and Jan van Goyen.

The Hermitage Museum displays paintings by French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists Pierre Auguste Renoir and Claude Monet.  Van Gogh famous paintings and other oil paintings by  Gauguin are on display., Camille Pissarro, Paul Cezanne, and Edgar Degas artworks form just part of the Museum's prestigious collection.

Modern art is displayed in the vast General Staff Building with colorful paintings by Matisse and Kandinsky. Another large room in the building features only German romantic art, with paintings by Caspar David Friedrich.

Russian art through the ages dominates the Winter Palace.

What are the Most Famous Paintings at The Hermitage Museum?

The Hermitage owns some famous art paintings.

Of the many Old Masters, Madonna Litta by Leonardo da Vinci and Annunciation by Giovanni Battista are the best known.

Titian’s Penitent Magdalene is on display as well as The Lute Player by Caravaggio.

The Lunch by Diego Velasquez and Perseus Releases Andromeda by Peter Paul Rubens are other Old Masters paintings in the Museum. 

Rembrandt paintings include Return of the Prodigal Son and Saskia as Flora 1634.

Claude Monet's impressionist painting Woman in the Garden, Sainte-Adresse and Boulevard Montmartre in Paris by Camille Pissarro are just two of the very famous artworks on display.

Colorful paintings include Dance by Henri Matisse and Composition VI by Wassily Kandinsky.

The Hermitage has several Van Gogh famous paintings, including Lilac Bush and White House at Night.

In addition, the Hermitage owns thirty-five paintings by Paul Gauguin. Woman Holding A Fruit (Where are you Going) and Maternity this artist's best-known works.
