Abbott Handerson Thayer is an American artist better known for his Famous Angel Paintings. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1849 and died in Dublin, New Hampshire, in 1921.
A delicate and luminous portrayal of heavenly beings characterizes his famous paintings. His paintings of angels often depict androgynous, ethereal figures with long, flowing hair and wings.
He entered the world as a member of a well-known Boston family. His father was a doctor, and Handerson Thayer was encouraged and supported by his family, who retained a private tutor to assist him with his aspirations of becoming a professional artist.
Abbott Thayer studied at the National Academy of Design in New York under the tutelage of Lemuel Wilmarth, also a founder of The Arts Student League. He gained considerable success in American Art during the latter part of the 19th century. After his education in New York, he studied at the Academy Des Beaux Arts in Paris alongside the French artist Jean Leon Gerome before returning to America to open his studio.
The Thayer family suffered a series of tragedies, with two of their children drying in close succession. After the death of his first wife, Thayer settled in New Hampshire and joined the Monadnock Artists Colony.
During this period, he married for the second time to a family friend, Emma Beach. They had three children together and enjoyed a simple life, rejecting the fast pace of New York City life.
During this era of contemplation and reflection, Abbott Thayer began his extensive series of angel oil paintings.
Thayer is also known as the father of camouflage, as he painted certain animals and birds against a counter-shaded background. At first glance, this has the visual effect of making the subject invisible to the eye. Although the artist also painted many landscape oil paintings, it is his angel paintings that have cemented his legacy as one of America's popular artists of angel art.
Abbott Thayer's paintings are in important American art collections, like the Smithsonian Art Institute and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Thayer's art influenced his students at his Studio in New Hampshire.
He taught a new generation and is famous as an American artist from the 19th century.
Angels in fine art oil paintings have always been desirable, and angel art has a history throughout the centuries. Renaissance Angel paintings by famous artist Raphael include his Cherubs and Putti from the Sistine Madonna. Spanish artist Luis Ricardo Falero, although specializing principally in nude paintings, angel art paintings like The Human Soul 1894 were painted in the same period as paintings by Abbott Thayer.
