Fauvism, from the French for wild beasts, is a movement which started in 1905, and lasted only a few years. The main artists of the Fauvist group of were Henri Matisse and Andre Derain and the term came about because of the use of strong color and wild brushstrokes in their paintings. Woman with a Hat 1905 is an oil painting by Henri Matisse which epitomizes the characteristics of Fauvism. The Fauvist artists were influenced by the Post-Impressionist work of Van Gogh, of Paul Cezanne, and the Tahiti paintings Paul Gauguin.
