Why is the Art Institute of Chicago famous?

The Art Institute of Chicago houses some of the world’s most famous paintings, and as a result, it welcomes around 1.5 million people through its doors every year.
The Museum is renowned for its exceptional exhibitions and curatorial expertise.
The building was constructed in 1893 for the World’s Columbian Exposition and has been expanded in recent years.

In 2016, the Art Institute received the largest financial donation in its history from Dorothy Edinburg, amounting to $35 million.  Edinburg had also been a significant patron of the museum and had previously donated over 1500 works of art.

The Museum proudly holds around 300,000 works of art in its permanent collection.

What Paintings are owned by the Art Institute of Chicago?

The Permanent Collection features one of the finest collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings in the U.S. 

George Seurat, A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, is always a popular oil painting reproduction and appears in our list of the world's most famous paintings.  Seurat completed the painting in 1884.  It is a supreme example of the Pointillism technique. 

However, two other paintings are noteworthy as highlights of the Museum collection.  The first is Edward Hopper's Nighthawks, which was acquired in 1942.  It is one of its greatest attractions.

The second artwork is The Great Wave by Hokusai, part of a series of 36 views of Mount Fuji.

Are Van Gogh paintings at the Art Institute of Chicago?

Van Gogh paintings are a feature in the permanent collection. In 2016, van Gogh’s painting The Bedroom was exhibited alongside two other versions for the first time.  The Museum also displays Vincent van Gogh's Self Portrait 1887 as part of its collection.
