Where is the Museum of Modern Art?

The Museum of Modern Art, known as MoMA, is on 53rd Street in New York City, between 5th and 6th Avenues.

MoMA was the brainchild of Abby Rockefeller, the wife of John D. Rockefeller Jr., and her two friends, Lille Bliss and Mary Quin Sullivan. They were all well-known patrons of the arts and significant collectors of Impressionist and post-Impressionist paintings. The idea was developed in 1929, and the new museum president was named A. Conger Goodyear, a member of the famous and wealthy Goodyear family.

When did MoMA move to the 53rd Street Address?

MoMA hosted a famous Picasso exhibition in 1939-40, in conjunction with the Art Institute of Chicago, which significantly raised the profile of MoMA.

The Rockefeller sons, Nelson and David Rockefeller, became trustees, and they were behind the move to a permanent location on 53rd Street.  Their father gifted the land. The new museum building opened in May, 1939, with 6,000 people attending the opening, and with a radio address from the White House by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
